Cuisinart was founded by Carl and Shrirley Sontheimer. After paying a visit to France in 1971, Carl, a physicist who also had a love for cooking, witnessed the demonstration of a comercially designed food preparation machine used by restaurants. He was certain he could create a machine adaptable for home use in America and returned to begin working on the new project.
After much work he introduced the first "food processor," and by 1974 he succeeded in perfecting the design with the goal of making it a more safe and effective consumer kitchen product. His food processors were endorsed a year later by top chefs like Julia Childs. The processor was marketed at the right time, as busy domestic gourmet cooks recognized the value in this time-saving product, and soon the demand for these small appliances had expanded exponentially.
Cuisinart continued to perfect its processor lines and also expanded into other kitchen product lines such as pasta makers, toasters and coffee makers. Today it is a leading brand of small kitchen appliances.
